It is said
that “silence is the most exponent”. Sometimes,
silence is more meaningful than words. Silence conveys the message more
effectively than words. The speaker should be skillful in using silence as a
technique to make his communication effective. He can use it for the following
purposes:
1) To
Silence the Audience:
If
there is noise among the audiences, the speaker should himself keep silence for
some time and just look at the audience by standing on the stage. It will help
the audience realize that the speaker is waiting for their silence.
2) To
Draw Attention of the Listeners:
The
speaker should start his speech and by uttering a few words should remain
silent for some moments. He can draw their attention in this way. For example,
the speaker may start his speech with the words – ‘Dear friends…’ and he should
remain silent for a few moments. The audience will keep silence and pay total
attention to the next words of the speaker.
3) To Give Emphasis on a Particular Word :
If
a particular word or sentence is very important, the speaker should keep
silence before uttering the word/sentence. For example, he should speak – ‘Dear
friends, today I want to speak on the very important issue……….CAREER AFTER
GRADUATION.’
Thus,
silence is very important in communication. It can be used for effective
delivery of speech.
