Simple Present Tense : Correct Usage



Structure:  S + Base/S Form + O/C/A

   Uses:

   Simple
Present Tense is used to talk about
habitual actions,
general truths, and facts
.

 

Habits and
routines:

     1.  I drink coffee
every morning.

     2. She brushes her
teeth twice a day.

     3They always go
for a walk in the evening.

 

General/Universal truths
and facts:

     1. Water boils at
100 degrees Celsius.

     2The Earth
revolves around the sun.

     3. Dogs are loyal
animals.

 

Scheduled events
or timetables:

    1. The train
departs at 8:00 a.m.

    2. The concert
starts in an hour.

    3. The store opens
at 9:00 a.m.

 

Permanent
situations:

    1. She lives in
Mumbai.

    2. He works as a
doctor.

    3. They own a
beautiful house.

 

Commenting on
actions in books, movies, or plays/To narrate a story:

   1. In the movie,
the main character saves the day.

   2. The book tells
the story of a young maidservant.

   3. The play portrays
the struggles of a family.

 

Use of Simple Present Tense for future action/reference
after Prepositions – when, before, if, as soon as, until, whether:

 

Structure : 

Simple Future Tense + Preposition + Simple Present Tense

Examples:

1. I will phone
you
when I come there.

2. The teacher will
assign homework
before he leaves the
class.

3. Rakesh will
surely come to see me
as soon as he returns from America.

4. I will teach
you
until you understand.

5. He will not
help you
if you do not ask for it.

 

Use of Simple Present Tense
used in different types of Conditional Clauses:

 

Zero
Conditional:

Structure:

If + Simple Present
Tense + Simple Present Tense.

Usage: The Zero
Conditional Clause expresses general truths or facts that always occur under
certain conditions.


Examples:

1. If you heat ice,
it melts. 

    (When the condition of heating ice is met, the result of melting
always hIf you mix red and blue, you get purple.

2. If the temperature
drops below freezing, the water turns into ice.

3. If you heat
iron, it expands.

 

First
Conditional:

Structure:

If + Simple
Present Tense + Simple Future Tense

Usage: The first
conditional expresses possible or likely future events based on a specific
condition (Cause + Result Relationship in the clauses).

Example:

1. If it rains, I
will take an umbrella.

2.  If you waste
your time, you will fail the exam.

3. If she continues
the same mistake, she will get punishment.
