Answer
the following questions in about 80 words.

Q. 1.
Sketch the character of ‘Datta’ in the short story ‘The Gold Frame’

Ans.  The
story, ‘The Gold frame’ is written by R. K. Laxman. The major theme of story is
‘false prestige and society’. It is humorous story. Datta is a major character
in the story. He is a frame-maker. He runs a shop of making frames. The name of
his shop is Modern Frame Works.  His description by the writer is quite
humorous. He has a concave figure. He wears silver-rimmed glasses. He perfectly
fits into his small shop.

Datta is a silent and hard-working man. He gave only laconic answers to his
customers. He discouraged his friends who disturbed him with their idle
gossips. He always remains busy with his work of fame-making. Thus, Datta is
depicted as a simple, hardworking and straightforward person.

Q. 2.
Describe Datta’s shop in his own words.

Ans. The name of Datta’s shop was ‘Modern Frame Works’. It was so
small. It was as though tucked between a drug store and a radio repair
shop.  It looked like an extra-large wooden packing case. Its legs were
unstable. It rocked when Datta shook his Dhoti vigorously to find the pencil
lost in it. Datta’s shop was a crowded with many frames and photos of Gods,
actors, leaders, etc. It is humorous and ironical that it was named as ‘Modern
Frame Works’ but it had ancient look. Nothing was modern with it.

Q. 3.
How is the ending of the short story “The Gold Frame”?

Ans. The
ending of the story, “The Gold Frame” is surprising. It is humorous too. Datta
spoils the picture given by the customer. Therefore, he fixes another picture
into the  frame in place of the original picture. He prepares his mind to
make the customer accept that this was the picture given by the customer if he
comes to know the deception. But the customer complains that Datta has deceived
the customer. Datta thinks that the customer recognized the deception. But the
customer tells him that he had asked for the cut mount and Datta has given him
a square mount. Datta gets shocked that the customer could not recognize the
original fault but another one. It makes the readers laugh that in the
confusion of selecting and shaping a photo like the given one by the customer,
Datta changes the frame itself and makes another fault.
