Simple Present Tense and Its Uses




Structure:  S + V1 + O 



Examples:

            We  learn 
English.
          s       v           
o

        i)    I study hard.

        ii)   You
sing a song.

        iii)  She
practises Yoga.

        iv)   It
runs fast.

        v)    They
play cricket.

        vi)   Rajesh
laughs loudly.

        vii)  Sameer
and Suniti look at each other.

 Uses:

 a)   To
state a general fact

 Examples:  
    
        i)  Lata Mangeshkar sings beautifully.

        ii)  Aishwarya dances skilfully.

        iii) Sachin
plays vigorously.
       

 
        iv) You speak lie.



b)     To
speak about habitual action


           Examples:

                 
                 i) He practises Yoga regularly.


                 ii) She gets up early in the
morning

                 iii) Rohit performs exercise
every morning.

                 iv) They go for stroll every
evening.


                 v) Sonali attends lectures regularly.


c)   To express the universal truth


          Examples:

     i)   The earth moves around the sun

     ii)  The sun rises in the east.

     iii) The stars shine at night.

     iv) A man is mortal.

     v)  The cuckoo sings in the spring.


d) To
tell/speak about the action which 
     goes on at the time of speaking


Examples:

      i)   Today, Sachin plays fast.

      ii)  Virat Kohli takes a very difficult
catch.

      iii) The
commentator speaks fluent English.

      iv) Now,
we learn writing correct English.

e) To narrate a story


Example:

          Amir Khan plays a major role in the film PK. He is an alien. He comes on the Earth for research. He loses his device which helps him to contact his fellows. Anushka Sharma helps him. Therefore, he falls in love with Anushka Sharma. 

        Progressive/Continuous

        Structure:  S + To be +Ving + O

           Examples:

               i)       We  are  learning  English.
                         S  To
be    Ving            O

               ii)    I
am studying hard.

               iii)   Sachin
is playing fast.

               iv)   Rahul
is running  slowly.

               v)    Lata
is singing.

               vi)   He
is reading a novel.


         Uses:
           a)   To
speak about the continuous action
              i.e. the action which is going 
              on at the
time of 
speaking.  


            Examples:

               i)   We are sitting into the classroom.

               ii)  The
boys are dancing in the rain.

               iii) The
girls are singing the national anthem.

               iv) Shubhangi
is travelling by bus.

               v)  Mahesh
is driving a car.


         b)  To express the action 
             in the nearest future.

          Examples:

               i)   Gautam is leaving for Mumbai this
evening.

               ii)  We
are taking the examination in the next week.

               iii) The Indian prime minister is visiting our town
in the next month.

               iv) We
are going for the movie tonight.


         c)
To speak about the action
           which is in progress 
for long,
           but not at the time of speaking.


         Examples:


               i)   Sachin is making records after records.

               ii)  India
is making progress by leaps and bounds.

               iii) Amir
Khan is making super hit films.

               iv) Rakesh is preparing for the competitive 

                  examinations.
